The winning project was selected from science fairs nationwide and will be displayed at AFCEA and the U.S. Naval Institute’s Joint Warfighting Conference and exposition, June 17-19, 2008, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The award includes a cash prize and a trip to Virginia Beach for the winner and his family.

AFCEA Educational Foundation Announces Disabled War Veterans Scholarships 

Co-Sponsored by AFCEA Educational Foundation and Microsoft Employees

April 21, 2008

The AFCEA Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the newly established Disabled War Veterans Scholarships of $2,500 each. The Scholarships are made possible by generous contributions from Microsoft employees with matching funds from Microsoft Corporation. The Scholarships are offered to active-duty service personnel, honorably discharged U.S. military veterans, reservists, and National Guard personnel who are disabled because of wounds received during service in Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations.

AFCEA/U.S. Naval Institute Warfare and Technologies Conference and Exposition Returns to San Diego
January 23, 2008
The largest state-of-the-art warfare and technologies conference and exposition on the West Coast returns to the San Diego Convention Center, February 5-7, 2008. At West 2008, senior military leaders and defense industry experts will address the theme “U.S at a Crossroads: Where – and How – After Iraq?” The 17th annual conference, which is expected to draw over 10,000 people, covers hot issues facing the military including fighting an unconventional war, shipbuilding, and cyber warfare. Attendees can see, touch and try out the latest communications, homeland security, biometrics and defense technologies from 400 exhibitors. The event is open to the public and admission is free. AFCEA Hawaii Chapter Endows the LTG Thomas Rienzi, USA (Ret.) Scholarship

The AFCEA Educational Foundation is pleased to announce a generous $60,000 contribution from the AFCEA Hawaii Chapter (AFCEA Hawaii) to launch and endow the new LTG Thomas Rienzi, USA (Ret.), Scholarship Fund. The AFCEA Hawaii LTG Thomas Rienzi, USA (Ret.), Scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior or current undergraduate student for consistent academic excellence, leadership performance and community involvement. Each scholarship award is $3,000. Candidates must be planning to attend or be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in the State of Hawaii. Students must be studying an eligible hard science or technical field. Applications are due no later than May 9, 2008, and the Award will be announced by May 30, 2008. Kent Schneider Takes Helm as AFCEA Leader

AFCEA International is pleased to announce the appointment of Kent R. Schneider as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association. He succeeds VADM Herb Browne, USN (Ret.), who retired in February after more than five years of service as AFCEA's President and CEO. The appointment was confirmed by the AFCEA Board of Directors and Mr. Schneider will begin at AFCEA on August 1.

"BIONIC BUGS" MAY BE NEXT DEFENSE DEPARTMENT INNOVATION

June 5, 2007

FAIRFAX, VA - The U.S. Defense Department is working to embed insects with microchips to create fleets of biological flying sensors controlled by human operators several miles away. The department’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is researching the use of butterflies, moths, dragonflies and even hopping and swimming insects as sensor platforms capable of detecting sounds, gases or heat-emitting objects.

TWO ILLINOIS GRADUATE STUDENTS RECOGNIZED WITH SHRADER SCHOLARSHIPS

April 28, 2006

This year, two of five national scholarships presented by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) went to engineering graduate students at Illinois. Robert Kidd, computer engineering, and Erick J. Rodriguez-Seda, electrical engineering, were named recipients of the Ralph W. Shrader Diversity Scholarship for Higher Education in Communications & Electronics. The scholarships--$3,000 each--are awarded to full-time graduate students currently working toward a master’s degree in the fields of electrical, electronics, chemical, systems or communications engineering; physics; mathematics; computer science; technology management; or information technology.

RETIRED MAJOR GENERAL PRESENTS AFCEA SCHOLARSHIP TO JINGYI LI
March 29, 2006

Retired Major General Charles F. Bolden, Jr. today presented Jingyi Li, a Master’s student in Computer Science, a $3,000 scholarship from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) to complete her graduate studies.  Li was one of five students worldwide to win the award, called the Ralph W. Shrader Diversity Scholarship, for 2006.

Ms. Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, Chairman of the American Red Cross, will present the award at the Club's annual Military Ball, being held October 4 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. This year's military recipient, ADM (Sel) Thad Allen, USCG, Commandant-Designate, U.S. Coast Guard, will also be honored at this event.
